3 Children;s illutrated mysteries [06 Jul 2008|08:39pm] whatwasthatbook [mayraluv] I read these three books when i was much younger. They were British mysteries and they were illustrated. One was about a marsh. The townspeople think there is a killer on the loose but the culprit turns out to be the marsh gases. A botanist is confused by delirious victims as the killer. The next is about a mansion and two siblings a boy and a girl being send off to visit their distant relatives. There they encounter mysterious happenings including a clock going off at strange hours I believe. The killer turns out to be the butler who was actualy the heir to the fortune but gambled it all away. The last is about a mysterious painting with a woman in a red cape. she is smiling but her posture often changes. they say she leads ships to their death. They can tell by the way her picture is. There is a man who specializes in creating antiques. he duplicates them. All of these books have intricate illustrations and are full of "red herrings". They have clues at the end of the book and the detailed answer on the the guilty party is and why. Anyone who knows these I would be so grateful. I have all this from memory but no titles or author. i'm pretty sure it was a series but with different characters each tiem. do the pantie dance

Long Time, no Write [06 Jul 2008|10:11pm] animorphs [thedolphingirl] So, I vanished off the Earth mysteriously some months ago. It wasn't actually mysterious; I had a lot going on at home -- my grandfather was diagnosed with prostate cancer, my grandmother's liver problem is getting worse and worse... All that lovely stuff that makes one want to crawl into a hole and forget everything. Anyway, I've been doing a lot better, and I have a funny anecdote from Saturday. Well, I'm sort of becoming Jewish (half my family is Jewish, but not my mother, hence I am not Jewish by birth). I go to synagogue a lot; weekly when able. They especially need people on Saturday to get the minimum of 10 people required to create a minyan (if they can't get one, I don't think they can pull out the Torah and would be limited to prayers from the siddurim, but that's besides the point). So, there we were, staving off things trying to give a chance to get that magical number of 10 - I don't count, not being Jewish technically (in Orthodox I wouldn't count being female, but we're not talking Orthodox). All of a sudden, there's a tapping noise at the glass door right behind me. I looked around, and there's a red-tailed hawk hovering right outside the door, tapping the window! Rabbi looks over at the door, I meet his gaze with a pretty shocked expression, and then because he couldn't see what was making the noise he ignored it and went back to services. Afterwards people were joking about the hawk trying to help make a minyan. ... And, well, it totally reminded me of Animorphs, naturally. Particularly book one where Tobias is trying to get into Jake's room... 2 wiggled with me|do the pantie dance

OMG, my computer has some sort of error... [07 Jul 2008|12:02am] writeangel [ mood | crappy ] Oh god, I am freaking out. In the middle of editing a Doctor/Donna vid my computer develped some sort of error and now some microsoft mapper isnt working along with a Volume shadow thingie.....*sigh* I cant view, edit, or hear my videos. IE isnt working but firefox is none of the major programs are working and I am about to cry........hopefully I can take it to a computer expert tomorrow and have the problem fixed without losing my dw eps and vids. I am so pissed, this computer is freakin' 8 months old - I know windows vista sucks but this is ridiculous. do the pantie dance

In Plain Sight [06 Jul 2008|10:01pm] semirose [ music | Scrubs ] OMG I love this show. I can't decide if I like this or Middleman more, but seriously they are so awesome. ( Quick thoughts on the newest ep ) OMG PSYCH AND MONK AND BURN NOTICE ARE ALL STARTING AGAIN SOON! When all the shows I watch during the year ended if felt like my summer shows were never going to start and I'm just glad IPS came about but I'm so happy these shows are starting again. What would my summers be without USA Network? But lol I was watching one of the Psych commercials and Shawn (or Gus? idk one of them) is drinking something out of a pineapple and it reminded me of when I was watching season 1 with the commentary and they were talking about the pineapple and how season 2 would have some other fruit as the obsession and now season 3 is starting and it's still the pineapple. I still need that Jon Stewart with the pineapple quote icon. I was too lazy to search after that ep, I should now. But look! I finally have an In Plain Sight icon! =D *giggles* Yay Marshall in pajamas! ETA: ok watching the midnight airing and I have to say I'm so torn. The Rest of My Weekend! [06 Jul 2008|09:20pm] longtimegone [ mood | tired ] So, back to real life... dramawench came to see me this weekend! It was so much fun! Full of music, fireworks, food, and of course, rabid geeky media consumption. :D She arrived about 9:30 Thursday night, and we went for a night time drive around Birmingham, which was filled with talking and music. :D I promise it was a lot more fun than it sounds. :)) We came back to the house and watched an ep of Torchwood and then called it a night, as we were both exhausted. Friday, I went to get us some Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast and then we went for yummy cheap Mexican for lunch. We lounged around the pool for a few hours that afternoon and then came back to the house to watch some SG1 and get ready for fireworks downtown. We met locumtenens for that and then drinks later, and then came home to watch some more TV and then crash. Saturday was full of sleeping late and sushi and Thai food and OMG DOCTOR WHO. I cooked spaghetti and we just really spent the rainy afternoon watching the two eps leading up to the Doctor Who finale, and then having our souls ripped out with the finale itself. To console ourselves we listened to sad music and went to Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream. As you do! The rest of the evening was SG1 and SGA and trying not to think about what an evil bastard RTD is, etc. Unfortunately, Alyssa had to leave this morning. :( We did a Great Media Exchange (again, as you do) and our weekend was over! It was so lovely though, and it goes without saying that my guest room belongs to dramawench whenever she wants to use it! Alyssa, Bucky misses you! <3333333333333 OMG, I'll be in DC next weekend! How to Write a Novel Redux [06 Jul 2008|10:25pm] larbalestier http://justinelarbalestier.com/blog/?p=1248 It has come to my attention that many readers of my post on how to write a novel are under the misapprehension that it is a description of how I write novels. It is not. It wasn’t even an accurate description of how I wrote them back when I wrote it. Lo, those many years ago.1 The novel I’m writing now makes no use of a spreadsheet,2 I did not borrow the plot for it,3 and the first sentence does not begin with “the” or “once upon a time”.4 I wrote the how-to-write-a-novel post for two reasons: I thought it would be funny. Maureen Johnson had just written a very amusing how-to-write-a-book post and I wanted to try my hand at the genre. I was also responding to the beginning writers who’d written asking questions about novel writing. Thus I was thinking about what might work for them. A common complaint was that they could never think of a plot. Hence the borrow-a-plot advice. Also they worried about the length and how to organise such a big amount of words. Hence the spreadsheet advice. Personally, pretty much every novel I’ve written has been produced differently from the previous one. I have no set methods. Though I have lots of madness. The novel I’m writing right now is the first one I’ve written with Scrivener and that’s making a huge difference to how I’m writing it. I’ve certainly never written a book completely out of order before. The last scene is already written though many from the middle are not. For me that is very strange. I’m sure there are people who write each novel in the exact same way5 but most of the writers I know say they find each one different and have to figure out how to write it as they go. I am the same. Well, okay, almost two years ago. Scrivener renders spreadsheets unnecessary. I’ve never written a novel that way, though I have written a number of short stories that retell ballads. One you can find here and another one will be published as part of Love is Hell later in the year. None of my novels do. Though Magic Lessons begins with “once”.
