The new casting spoiler for Doctor Who series 4

Catherine Tate is set to return to the TARDIS for the complete 13 week run of Series Four of Doctor Who.

Award winning comedian Tate will reprise her role as Donna, the runaway bride from last year's Christmas special, despite turning down the Doctor's invitation to travel with him at the end of that adventure.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2007/07/03/46831.shtml
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6267680.stm

*slams head into desk repeatedly*

...

Ahem. Okay, with that done, I can now proceed to outline my opinion in a coherent manner.

I am not and never have been convinced of Catherine Tate's acting ability. She can quite commendably put on different voices, adopt different gaits, wear prosthetics and wigs, and arrange her facial features into a variety of expressions - but she cannot embody a character. To one extent or another, she is always Catherine Tate.

On the other hand, David Tennant seems to effortlessly become an entirely different person in each role that he takes on. You only have to look at his performance in The Family of Blood - as the Doctor, as John Smith, and as the Doctor pretending to be John Smith - to see he has that ability to embody a character. No matter who he's playing, it's never David Tennant on screen, but the Doctor or Casanova or Peter Carlisle or Alan Hamilton or Brendan Block or...

But Catherine Tate is Catherine Tate. And, for me, that breaks the fourth wall. Now, this was alright for a Christmas special - you're stuffed full of food and a bit of silliness is really all you're after. But for a thirteen episode primetime family drama series...?

I will say, however, that Donna is exactly the sort of character that's needed right now. I am much more confident about Martha's return now than I was before - as long as Donna and Martha get on (and they'd better do; the TARDIS is not a place for catfights), I think Donna will kick the Doctor's butt into giving Martha the recognition she deserves. And, in fact, into doing many things that at this point he really really needs to do before we all go off him.

Donna and Martha will certainly be an interesting pair to watch. Ooh boy. What an arse-kicking, face-slapping double act! I can imagine them getting up to all kinds of things, in between whipping the Doctor and being snarky about stuff.

But still, I would rather have had a Donna-a-like than Donna herself.

PS: Proper well-thought-out reaction post to Last of the Time Lords should be coming some time within the next couple of days. Still just getting over the shock and collating my thoughts at this point, but I should be done soon.

PPS: As a confession, I must say that I have never found The Catherine Tate Show particularly funny, so I quite possibly have some bias against her. But, apart from the fourth-wall-breaking-ness, I enjoyed The Runaway Bride - so if they can inject Catherine Tate with some acting ability before series four starts, I will be like HOH YES AWESOME when it airs.

March Personal Challenge Table

For the past couple of days, I've been lurking on the Orion forums. I've only been chatting on the spambox and reading people's new posts, but it's made me feel a lot more like I'm part of the fandom again. I've been a lot happier today than in a quite a while. It actually feels like summer.

Of course, reading all of the Judges' analyses of the fics has made me want to write some fic of my own. But I'm not really getting any ideas at the moment, so I thought I would do... another personal challenge!

Fics Written

01. prompt
[-none yet-]

02. prompt
[-none yet-]

03. prompt
[-none yet-]

Prompts

omen
tundra
fade

doll
spiral
plural

mellifluous
lipstick
malice

zodiac
incommunicado
compass

embryo
opaque
fungus

I thought I'd make a little change for this one: usually I have loads of numbered prompt words but only write a few fics, so this time I've got loads of prompts but only three numbered fic boxes to fill in. Which, erm, considering I'm still pretty dedded, is probably a doubly good idea.

Feel free to join me, table code available on request, all the usual stuff, etc. etc.

<s>Please ignore the fact that this is only the third personal challenge I've done in ten months</s>.

<<< September 2006 Personal Challenge Table

The really super subtle Orion suggestion list, year two.

*completely ignores the fact that she's been AWOL for over a month, says nothing about ever-growing pile of pooeyness that her life is becoming, and chirpily gets straight down to business*

It has suddenly come to my attention that Orion Awards nominations close on the 15th, so if I'm going to do one of those "for your consideration" posts to <s>ruthlessly whore myself out</s> selflessly help us bolster the number of noms, I had better do it... well, now.

Thus there is below a short list of those fics I wrote during 2006 that I consider to be slightly less crap than the rest, with handy dandy links so you can check them out and see if you'd like to nom them or not.

GENRE: HET ROMANCE
Family Tree

GENRE: SLASH ROMANCE
Possibilities
Psychosomatism

GENRE: ANGST
Exaltation
Heir

By the way, Surrogate has already been nommed for both "Best Drabble" and "Best Miscellaneous Genre" - which is why I haven't listed any fics for possible Type nomination, as it seems I only wrote drabbles last year¹.

¹ Yes, yes, I know. But give me a break, I spent most of my time being really ill - umm, I mean, valiantly working away at "Undercurrents".

im in ur internetz, crazifying ur jurnal... oh wait this my jurnal! lolz

YAY! I've been up for ALMOST 26 HOURS! LOL, I'm not even tired, I'm just hyper and giddy. Everything has been about teh lulz for the last 21 hours or so. My brain is like completely screwed and full of teh silliness. But woe, for I wants this entry to be readable, and not not.

I shall therefore write this entry in the form of a NICE and ORGANISED list, in order that my thoughts shall likewise be NICE and ORGANISED. Thus, here's what's been happening to me since I was last on teh intarwebz a week ago, or just stuff which is interesting:

1) NaNoWriMo! Everybody thought I should sign up, but I refused due to being smart and sensible and knowing it be an extremely bad idea for my sanity. At the last minute I caved in and decided to do it, only I told hardly anyone this because it was sooper sekrit. I wrote 600 words on the first day and gave up completely. Then everyone found out I was doing NaNo and asked how it was going and I got to tell them I QUIT hahaha. I is brilliant!

2) I then promptly caught TEH FLU oh noes :'( and have spent the last week reading crap books and being in pain, etc.

3) Today was my first day back on the net and I made up for lost time by spending all of it downloading a bazillion icons and reading a million fics, mostly from Torchwood which might explain why...

4) I have become completely obsessed with Torchwood. It is made of AWESOME and CRACK! And also the cast have taken the lead from their brothers-in-arms (DOCTOR WHO MASSIVE REPRESENT) and been invading my dreams at the drop of a hat. Over three consecutive nights I had visits from Ianto and Owen, then Jack, and then Gwen. <s>Tosh, you'd better get your butt into mah subconscious TONITE, ya hear?</s> Oh yeah, and I did mention the CYBERWOMAN fighting the PTERODACTYL? And the complete shipability of ANY CHARACTER with ANY OTHER character? And the CRACK? IT IS THE WIN.

5) Also, Ianto Jones is HOT LYKE WHOA. At first I was like, "why the Ianto love? he done nuffink" and then episode four came along and I was like "♥♥♥!!!" I such a h0r for teh bandwagonz :(

6) I'm now addicted to the phrase IM IN UR [PLACE], [VERB]ING UR [OBJECT]. I blame iconz for infecting me. And teh cats. And also teh phrase for bein' SO DARN FUNNY.

7) HEY, I never told y'all but I passed the 10,000 icon mark a few weeks ago! Whoo! In fact my collection has now reached 12,500 so LOL awesome.

8) Oh and no I have NOT HAD ANY ALCOHOL. Nor have I had any CHOCLITT. In fact I forgot to eat at all for about 20 hours because lol flu virus it makes me unhungry. Teh flu virus is also what is making me untired because I's been like "wtf, sleep?" for the last week. So maybe the FLU is also making me hyper! YES! Blame the virus!!

9) JOHN BARROWMAN WAS ON WOSSY TONIGHT. And he was hilarious. And he DID HIS SCOTTISH ACCENT. It was all WIN.

10) For the whole of today, on average every ten minutes I have thought "I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK I'M ON ABOUT." This is true and also should totally be my new motto.

11) This entry is a FACSIMILE of a SHAM because even though I wrote it at the time it says I did, I didn't post it until the morning! Oh noes! But I was like going cross eyed and falling asleep, because while my brain was awake from flu, my body was tired like a tired thing normally would be after 26 hours. And btw YES I AM STILL HYPER this morning. :D :D :D

PS: Future self, I hope you remember that in the social climate of today this idiom is immediately recognisable as having an inherent tone of mockery; and if all else fails I WAS DRUNK ON AIR, OFFICER.

BIRTHDAY! Yay for me!

HURRAH! For it is my birthday! Yay.

Most of my presents haven't arrived but I managed to get drunk on a CHOCOLATE FROM A CHOCOLATE BOX therefore I WIN. I spent THREE HOURS bouncing around and typoing at people, being HILARIOUS/deluded. :D

I also managed to FORGET to watch Blue Peter, even though I reminded myself yesterday because LEMONY SNICKET was on. Then I looked up when the repeat was and managed to forget AGAIN, and only remembered about ONE MINUTE before the segment started! Win!

Oh and I got messaged by about six million people at once on MSN which was LOLZ and also AWESOME. ♥ to you all! (Whether you were on MSN or not!)

And no! I shall not tell you how old I am, for I am now FAR TOO OLD! *pins on the BRIGHT PINK "birthday girl" badge her parents gave her and parades around with a teddybear*

(This post brought to you by the Association for RANDOM CAPSLOCK.)

September Personal Challenge Table

Anyone remember that fanfic challenge I set myself back in May? No? Well I'm not surprised, I only finished about four of the ten prompts I set myself... But now that I don't have imminent exams, I figure it might be a good time to start it up again.

So here we go, another set of prompts, all done up in a nice table - because filling up a pretty table is the real fun of a challenge.

MIA: Draco Trilogy

ACK.

I've just found out that Cassie Claire has, as of now, removed her Draco Trilogy from Fiction Alley and left the fandom. But I haven't finished reading it yet! Eek! I read Draco Dormiens and half of Draco Sinister ages ago, but then got sidetracked by exams or something and never went back to finish it. And now it is gone, and I can never read the end. *dramatic hand to forehead*

So, does anyone out there have the PDFs that were apparently posted at the end of DV17? Or the links to them, if they're still there? Please? *big goo-goo eyes* If you can help me get a copy of this fic I will shower you in love! Or at least shower you in little ♥♥♥ symbols.

<s>If all else fails I suppose I could always read it in Russian...</s>

Edit: If you want the PDFs too, they can be downloaded here.

Prerequisite Doctor Who finale anticipation post.

Okay, I'm waiting for people to post stuff on the Orion Awards and I'm bored, so I'm going to jot down my thoughts/speculations/hopes about Saturday's Doctor Who series finale.

Beware: spoilers for everything from 1x13: The Parting of the Ways to the 2nd Christmas special and series 3!

Okay, first of all: Rose. We know this is her last episode. The big question is, does she die or does she choose to leave the Doctor? I know the voiceover says she dies, but... the shots of her on the beach alone? To me, that is a Rose who's left the Doctor. There's a maturity and a sadness there I don't think could have come from anything else.

Naturally I don't want her to die, but I can't see any reason why she would leave the Doctor. So perhaps she will be like Jack and die before being brought back to life somehow. And either the Doctor will have already left, as with Jack, or that will make her choose to leave.

<s>But, of course, if she doesn't die and the Doctor leaves her on alive on earth, she will eventually die there.</s>

Also, the trailer shows that Pete is in it. Yay! Am I the only person thinking, "they've killed off Earth!Pete and alternateEarth!Jackie ... now the Pete and Jackie left can hook up"? XD; No, I don't think it would be an OMG-my-true-love-has-returned thing, but a kind of angsty, you're-so-similar-to-my-dead-spouse thing.

And I wouldn't be upset if Rose got back with Mickey. Mickey's cool now. Mickey's got guts. He is a Mickey that could match Rose. He's a Mickey worthy of Rose. Yes, Doctor/Rose is adorable - but he's immortal, she's not, we all knew it was vaguely doomed.

So... after Rose, the new companion.

Ever since I heard Billie Piper was leaving, I began to think, "who could play the new companion?" And every time I saw a new character in the series, I was assessing them for the companionability.

When Adeola came on, I was thought, "hey, she's cute, maybe she could be the new companion!" But then she died, and I was sad. But the same actress has been cast as an entirely different character (with different last names too, I've discovered, so presumably not related) so hurrah! I've heard some people saying that she didn't do a good job with Adeola but I thought she did. Also, people are complaining about her having two different parts so close together... Well, not really. She's not in the Christmas special. So it'll be April-ish before we see her.

...Yeah, okay, so we'll still know it's the same actress. But give her a different hairstyle, different clothes, different make-up, and - if she actually is a good actress - a different air, and I think it'll be obvious it's not the same character.

Talking of the Christmas special... Torchwood will have aired by then. Who wants to bet the "surprise" will be Captain Jack?! XD; (Well. Maybe not. But it would be cool!)

The Great Spamfest of Orion 2006:

Today shall go down in history as the Great Spamfest of Orion 2006.

First our shoutbox was converted to a spambox and sank under the weight of insanity and confusion. Then we moved to a thread in the forums (called "a long topic", despite starting out very short) and attempted to hit 50 pages.

Particular highlights:

refloc posting from a tree (not metaphorically - literally)

"WTF my name is not THE!"

Gus-Gus : SEXY FAT MOUSEYS!

recurring mentions of badgerbadgerbadger

Barry Scott vs Steve Ballmer

me spending three pages talking to myself

Buteline, Kinky and other crazy ships

The Pope + Oprah = the world-ruling power that is Poprah!

Poprah's theme song

discussion of whether God has a sense of humour a.k.a. are we screwed

far too much discussion of "Time To Pee"

SNAKES ON A PLANE!

SNAPE'S ON A PLANE!

Poprah vs Japan

a whole page of us going "YAY" when we hit our target of 50 pages, with a time of 5 hours 1 minute

many notations that a) everyone should get an LJ, b) everyone should GO TO BED

The Onions, and Poprah, own you all. The spam cannot be defied <s>or explained</s>.

And now I really am GOING TO BED.

(Fellow spammers, I love you all.)

Exams = over

Man, my exams finished yesterday - *looks at clock* - err, I mean, the day before yesterday and I haven't even done the requisite "OMG freedom!!!1" post yet.

...

OMG freedom!!!1

There. XD;

So what have I been doing with myself? Playing solitaire, mucking around, continuing my obsession with downloading icons that helpfully started just before my exams... And I've made a few icons too. Now that I have time to get back into them, I guess I could start up my old icon journal again. Hmm. Well, we'll see.

In other news, I have a headache and I'm going to bed!

Green Wing, Doctor Who and Eurovision. (Yay for TV.)

Green Wing series finale. WTF. Seriously, that is about all I have to say: WTF. Mac? WTF. Guy/Caroline? WTF. Second literal cliffhanger? W.T.F. Green Wing writers... I love/hate you all.

Tonight's Doctor Who, "The Age of Steel"... oh man. Mickey! No! Come baaaccckk! I was really starting to love him as a character (mainly, I'll admit, due to the pure awesomeness of Noel Clarke) and was getting really excited to see where he'll go. And now I never will. Woe. But otherwise, awesome episode. <s>So gruesome though</s>.

Eurovision 2006 - upholding the standard of tackiness that seems to be required of the show. But zomg we didn't get nil points!!1!1one! I thought that Norway and Romania were good - I've gone and yoinked their songs from their sites - but the winners, Finland, were just... OMGWTFLOL.

<s>Yes, my life revolves around TV</s>

So sleepy *flops*

Pain! And fic.

Arg. I've suddenly - as in, within the last ten minutes - developed an annoying low-level stomachache. This is to add to the almost-constant headaches I've been having over the last few days.

It's a wonder I manage to fic at all under these conditions. *dramatic!hand-to-forehead*

But, yes, ficced I have. Not only is Undercurrents now 85% edited, but for the last couple of days I've been working on another little ficlet called ...

Family Tree

I --

It didn't have to be said. They both knew that a human and a fairy could never be together.

II --

He had never told her he loved her. He had never told her he'd miss her. Even after everything, that would have been too much to ask of him. But she understood.

III --

He married Juliet. She married Trouble. They all did their best.

It was nearly enough.

IV --

The day Artemis the Third was born, his father planted an acorn by the stream in the manor grounds.

V --

He never made her promise to do so, but she kept a watch over all of the Fowl children.

Some of them were more like him, some less. But all of them shared at least that one heartbreaking thing with him.

VI --

Full, gibbous or new moon, he never came to the tree. The children did. Still, somehow, she always thought of it as their tree.

When his grandson turned twelve, she carved some Gnommish into the trunk.

VII --

The Fowl family grew and spread, and soon there were branches that didn't even carry the name any more.

VIII --

When it was time, she took her daughter – wholly fairy – to that oak, and let her choose her first acorn.

IX --

She heard they buried him with his favourite suit, his wedding ring, and a strange gold coin with a hole through the middle.

X --

As ordered, the lawyer distributed the goods to everyone who came below Artemis the Second on the family tree.

But he never managed to locate the woman to whom Mr Fowl's own painting Selene and Endymion had been left. It remained in the study at the manor.

XI --

When his great-granddaughter was christened Holly Branwen, she wondered. But she knew he'd kept his secret.

XII --

It was worse now, always seeing his descendants and never him. It hadn't hurt quite so much before.

XIII --

The Fowls gradually drifted back to being criminals. Without him, they needed to.

XIV --

She saw the great tree slowly wither and rot.

XV --

After all the time she had spent watching these people, she'd absorbed some of their traditions. But somehow Christmas always felt like Good Friday, especially when it fell on the full moon.

XVI --

One year she collected a handful of acorns, realising it may never produce another crop. None germinated.

She didn't get a chance to try again. She had been right.

XVII --

The last Fowl died childless, and the estate was left to one of the other branches of the family. But even they were failing.

Eventually it passed into the hands of the faithful Butlers, their cousins.

XVIII --

She was there, invisible, when they cut down the carcass and hauled it away. The largest piece she could salvage was only as big as her fist.

XIX --

Her granddaughter found the curious block of wood in the attic while she was helping Mum and Grandpa sort out Granny Holly's things. She showed it to Grandpa, but he said nothing.

If she had been older, his expression would have told her everything she wanted to know.

----------

Rather oddly, this came out as precisely 500 words. I'm not quite sure what I think about it though. It's very... Well, it pushes the whole many-short-scenes style that I used on Undercurrents to an entirely different level. (This style has totally infected my head since I started Undercurrents.)

Also, I showed the draft of this to blueyeti and she's probably going to remix it at some point.

Right, well, I must go before my brain completely collapses. And before my parents go insane from having to shout six bazillion times that the BAFTAs have already started. XD;;

May Personal Challenge Table

I've decided to start trying to give myself a set of prompt words each month, to encourage myself to actually, y'know, write something. With a lovely little table to put all of my responses in. (Because tables are the best part of challenges.)

01. web
Hidden Agenda

02. jar
[-none yet-]

03. blemish
[-none yet-]

04. elegy
Family Tree

05. demarcation
[-none yet-]

06. borrow
[-none yet-]

07. new
Heir

08. cog
[-none yet-]

09. percolate
[-none yet-]

10. patchwork
[-none yet-]

This may all end in horrible failure but who knows. Anyone who feels like joining me on this endeavour, feel free to yoink the table.

Also, I believe this is the first time I've posted using this icon. Yay, shiny.

September 2006 Personal Challenge Table >>>

Quite obviously, I am psychic.

For half of today I've had the words "team laser explosion" rattling about my head. Which is odd, because I hadn't seen anything even vaguely Weebl & Bob related for days, so how did it get there? It's not like it's a set of words that commonly gets stuck in my head. More over TLE episodes are a fairly small number of the overall W&B canon.

And yet when I went and checked Weebl's Stuff, I discovered there had been a new TLE episode today!
In honour of the fact that the new series of Doctor Who is starting in, ooh, about two weeks, I have made myself a new icon. <s>Also because the BBC have updated their Doctor Who site which means I have pictures to make it with</s>.

A cookie to you if you can figure out the major edit I've made to the picture. (And a cookie to me if you can't.)

Yes, that is all.

EWB?

Anybody remember the EWB saga from my old blog?

I went back to look at that thing today, for no particular reason, and decided to click on the stats counter to see how many hits it was getting despite having been inactive for well over two years.

It's still getting a couple of hits every day. 50% are from people doing Google searches for EWB. The other 50% are from links in other blogs where people are saying, "WTH? How am I being listed for EWB? All of these other people are too and they can't work out why either."

ROFL...

(And no, I won't tell you what EWB stands for - I don't want to get listed for it again. Take a guess. Or if you're really that interested, you can look at the recent visitors stats.)

Edit: And because we all know that I'm completely insane...

WHOO.

Yes, I have finally finished the first draft of my fic!

It's over 3600 words, so it is the longest thing I have written.

But it is done.

Now I just have to wait for blueyeti to beta it. (And anyone else who's feeling particularly masochistic.)

Yes I have been awake all night. And now: breakfast.

A Tale of Fic, which is both Good and Scary, and also involves Ravaging by Bunny.

Those of you who've talked to me on MSN over the last couple of days might know that I've been working on a new fanfic. I'm writing it in a totally different style to normal, and the change has been so much fun. It's also a lot longer than most of my fics: I've just hit 1000 words, and about now I would be starting to wrap up. But I'm only about one third of the way in!

Unfortunately, it's not all good. I have, to some extent, been resisting writing this fic. Why? The ship. I won't tell you what it is, but it's rather scary. I'm quite disturbed that my mind could come up with such a thing - and more to the point, make it so plausible. Not only that but I keep having to haul the characters back in; most of this fic has to be suggestion, because I really don't want it to be rated more than PG-13. It's breaking my brain enough as it is.

Also I've now reached the point where I've written the scenes that are the easiest or the most fun, and am just left with those that have some bearing on the plot. It's getting pretty difficult. Throughout, I've been taking sporadic breaks to play Solitaire or Freecell, but now I'm having a much higher ratio of them. But I am pressing on. Apart from its scariness, I think this fic could be really good, so I want to do justice to it and create something I can be proud of, if also disturbed by...

And now that I've <s>worried</s> tantalised you, I shall be off to bed.

Ficciness: 12LH and 1sentence.

Sooooo sleepy...

Today I finally joined in with the cool kids and made a table for my heracleslabours entries. Unfortunately this has alerted me to how very little I have done. Most of the other people have at least one fic finished; I've hardly written more than a page for all of mine combined. <s>But I am involved in some pretty intensive brainstorming.</s>

Oh, and I think I forgot to mention but I put up my Holly/Juliet fic for 1sentence about a week ago, if you want to take a look.

Also there's loads of news in Eye on Fowl - including about Colfer's UK tour in April. (I've spent today prodding my parents to book tickets for one of the events. XD;)

Still not feeling well. I'm a little better, and at least I woke up before nightfall today. *rolls eyes* <s>Although that doesn't explain why I'm not asleep yet. Oops.</s>

Yes. This is a short entry.
